School development update At the mid-point of the academic year and with Parent/Teacher consultations taking place this week it is an opportune time to reflect on the last 12 months in the life of the school. We are constantly trying to move forward in offering the very best for our children. As a measure of progress, here are some of our successes: • Vastly improved ICT resources with 6 interactive whiteboards fitted and thirty laptop computers with wireless network connections to enhance teaching and learning. Regular use of ICT facilities and expertise of Community Learning Centre. • Very good SATs results in Key Stage 1 and Maths in Key Stage 2. • New Early Years outdoor play resource. New study room created from old library. • School Council set up giving the children a greater voice. • Play leader appointed to extend children’s recreational activities at lunchtime. • Family learning sessions for parents and carers to support children’s learning. • Support for parents managing children’s behaviour and provision of councillor support for parents and children • National awards achieved: Active Mark for our P.E. provision, Healthy School Award, EcoSchool award, Football Association Charter Mark, Community Award • Well received concerts at Christmas and Easter. • After-school activities: Spanish, Football, Gymnastics and Dance, High Fives, Kwik Cricket, athletics, chess, maths club, choir, band, and ICT. Strong links with Rawmarsh Sports Partnership has led to a great improvement in the range and quality of activities available for our pupils. • Residential visits to Hesley Wood and Robin Wood for outdoor adventurous activities and day visits to places of interest to enhance classroom work. • Multicultural events celebrating Traveller, Judaism , Islam and African culture • Closer collaboration with our partner schools in Hoyland and Goldthorpe • International links with children corresponding with 5th Grade students in Maryland U.S.A., guest speakers from Austria, Canada, Zimbabwe and the United States. Some things we trying to improve (based on our analysis and the results of last summer’s questionnaire to parents) • Children’s writing by following a strategy consistent throughout the school. • Children’s mental maths skills to tackle problem solving activities with greater success. • Greater challenge for more able pupils. • Pupil attendance • The woodland area into a dynamic environmental resource Best wishes Peter Davison Headteacher
